Water Shrew on Raasay

Also while I was away, Ann Oliphant and two of her grandchildren found a dead water shrew at Clachan, Raasay.

The Highland Mammal Atlas lists Raasay as a known site but does not show a dot on the distribution map – probably because the location of earlier records is unknown.  A few years ago I took part in the Mammal Society water shrew survey and they were unable to trace the earlier record(s) but thought they were from the 1960s or earlier.  (My baited tubes intended to collect droppings produced no positive results.)

In the past few years we have had first records for fox, hedgehog, roe deer and mink on Raasay.  However, the continued presence of water shrew is perhaps the most pleasing recent mammal record for the island.  Now waiting for first aardvark record……
